UAB about to nab another 2009 player?

Posted by Brooks

Jeremy Jacob, originally from the 2007 class, could be close to verballing to UAB. Let me look a little more into this one and I'll update a little later today.

Jacob originally signed with Georgia out of high school but announced in July that he planned to transfer. Jacob, a 6-8, 230 lb. small forward from Baton Rouge, La., played in the first six games of the 2008 season as a true freshman, averaging 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds. However, he suffered a stress fracture in his left foot, missing the remainder of the season.

“Jeremy has expressed an interest in playing for a program where he can play a more prominent role than he believes he will play at Georgia,” Felton said. “We have thoroughly enjoyed our time together. We wish Jeremy the very best for his future.”

Since Jacob appeared in less than 20 percent of Georgia’s total of 34 games last season, he was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA and therefore, he will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Jacob attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, averaging 18 points and 12 rebounds per game. He was rated a four-star prospect by Rivals (27th best small forward and 90th best prospect overall in the class of '07).

Another verbal is just what we need.

Hopefully, it wont be like Tamir Jackson and Maurice Boldens.

This guy sounds a heckuva lot better though. And, since his freshman year was a redshirt, he will have 3 years after juco next year.

He could be a 3 year starter at the 4 for us.

What is your source for this? I'm curious where the report originated from.

A source close to the program that I speak with. He said he will get back with me later with more details. Rivals.com now also has an article about it, but I cannot read it.

oh, and if you want more specifics than that, I'm not gonna blab my sources name all over a free blog but feel free to email me. I really don't mind talking more about it over email.

Im the first anonymous. I dont have any reason to doubt you and rivals on this.

Does your source know why Bolden backed out ?

A couple other things, this new walk on, what was the connection to Davis ? Did Mike know his dad ?

I noticed that Tyler Marsh is no longer listed on the official roster. Is he off the team ?

The big question is...is Mayfield here because they wont let him leave without being in good academic standing or because he wants to be and is eligble ?

If he is not in good academic standing, then he could decide to leave at mid year when he is. (If he is)

No, it's no biggie...I didn't take it that way.

With Moore, I've been trying to track down an answer on what kind of connection this kid has with Alabama, but I have been completely unsuccessful up to this point. I have spoken with multiple people, one with deep connections in Texas, who don't know very much about the kid. I still haven't gotten an answer to the very question you're asking.

In terms of Bolden, he originally signed with Southern Miss on November 17th, 2006 before eventually having to head to MMI. It's closer to home for him. I am not sure if there is a specific reason, as it has been some time. BUT, I will try to track one down for you.

Marsh...that's news to me. That's the first I've seen that his name is not on the roster.

Mayfield...he's an enigma. You aren't going to find a clear cut answer on why and if. No one I've spoken with will say if he's eligible but they also have not said he isn't...so. I think a big part of him NOT leaving deals with, if he leaves ineligible, UAB's APR is hurt even more. They may be forcing him to stick around by not granting his release due to that fact...exactly as you indicated in your question.

Moore backed away from USA because Arrow wanted him to redshirt or spend a year at a juco and come back. His dad didnt want him to do either. His dad played at Southern Illinois so I speculated that he might know Davis. Apparently he grew 4 inches in a year so he doesnt really have any post moves.

If Mayfield is still on scholarship but plans on leaving at midyear, then his scholarship should be open to give to Moore if need be.

If nobody is talking then chances are mayfield isnt eligible.

As desparate as we are at the 5 next year, Im not sure Moore is going to be able to help us much given that Arrow wanted to redshirt him.
--------------

Moore had been receiving attention from Army, Baylor, and several Southland Conference teams, but a visit to Mobile and a tour of the Mitchell Center sold him on South Alabama. Having family nearby helped to seal the deal.

According to Moore's coach, Dwayne Gerlich, Moore is a player "who is still trying to figure out his body." He posted up very rarely and is at his best facing the basket. A former guard, Moore is a very good ballhandler and passer and excels in getting rebounds and delivering outlet passes to key the fastbreak. On defense he moves his feet well and his seven-foot wingspan, like fellow recruit DeAndre Hersey, makes him tough to shoot over. His lack of bulk, however, will probably keep him on the perimeter.

Cameron Moore will not be a Jag. The coaches wanted him to redshirt; his dad didn't want him to. The coaches 2nd suggestion was for him to attend JC for a year, then come back to USA as a sophomore; his dad didn't want that, either. So, they've parted ways.

Thanks. I had seen that blurb about the USA coach wanting him to sit a year. I just don't understand what this kid's fascination with the state of Alabama is...USA now UAB. I have been trying to figure out if the kid has family here, knows someone, etc...no answer so far.

It said "Having family nearby helped to seal the deal."
When he inked with USA so he has someone around here.

What it comes down to is when Crawford is out, do we play this freshman or really go with 4 guards and Kinnard.

Vaden, Delaney and Toney are all
5th year seniors. Id want one of them in there rather than a freshman that wasnt highly recruited.

And Delaney can jump through the roof.

Here is a look at the 2008-09 BSC men’s basketball recruiting class:

Tyler Marsh
6-0 – 175 – Jr. – Guard – Birmingham, Ala./UAB
“Being a coach’s son, [UAB Associate Coach Donnie Marsh] Tyler is comfortable doing whatever his team needs to win,” said Cole. “His basketball IQ, quickness and unselfishness will fit very well with our up-tempo style of play. We are excited to have him in our program.”
