Memphis still in it with John Wall

Posted by Brooks

Despite rampant rumors about John Wall being close to committing to Oklahoma State and then Baylor over the past month, Wall has still not given the "I'm gonna pee my pants if" verbal to ANY school. The assumption was that Dwon Clifton gets hired at a school (which is what happened this past Thursday) and John Wall follows shortly after. Well, not so fast.

Bomani Jones had an interview with Levi Beckwith this past Saturday, August 2nd on AM 850 The Buzz to discuss Wall's recruitment. So, now the natural question for those who don't know much about John Wall is, "Who in the world is Levi Beckwith?". Levi Beckwith is John Wall's high school coach at Word of God Academy. With the recent power plays made by the Clifton brothers in order to land a job and a sponsorship for D-One Sports, Beckwith has decided to step up and look out for the better interest of a high school kid. In the interview linked above between Beckwith and Jones, Beckwith makes it clear that he is encouraging John Wall to be more vocal about what he wants. So, to all of you Memphis, Oklahoma State, Oregon and NC State fans who had lost hope, fear not, Beckwith to the rescue.

The most promising news is for Memphis fans. John Wall loves Memphis, Coach Cal and Derrick Rose. Two months ago, John Wall equated Memphis. Slowly but surely, the Memphis staff began dealing less and less with the Cliftons (due to the fact that they weren't offering a job). So, Memphis fell further and further down Wall's list (which was strongly influenced at the time by the Cliftons).

Wall idolizes Derrick Rose. They are only two years apart in terms of class, but Wall has already been dubbed the 'next Derrick Rose'. He was catapulted to the #1 overall pick in the draft. Cal gets guys to the league, plain and simple. That is Wall's main goal so that he can provide for his mother. Sources left and right have confirmed that John Wall (the actual kid who plays) really wants to play at Memphis. The Tuesday night of the week long festivities in Vegas, Derrick Rose was in the stands watching John Wall play. Coincidence? No.

There is a laundry list of those who would be happy if Wall decided to spurn the Cliftons and verballed to Memphis:

  • John Wall

  • Levi Beckwith

  • Cal and staff

  • Memphis fans

  • college coaches across the country

There are two sets of people I could see not being happy:

  • Baylor's staff

  • the Clifton brothers

In my opinion, college basketball is the greatest overall sport. March and April are my favorite times of the year. My wife says I have an obsession.
